Think back to all of the construction sites you drove pass in the last few weeks, or even months. Sure, we think, moreso, about all the annoyances that come as a result, such as a slower traffic flow or fewer lanes.
Now, think about what you don’t see. Imagine the behind the scene actions that must take place before we even get to this point. You probably thought about the call the city responded to that fueled this action. Or you probably thought about the preparation process – the materials or the labor force needed.
Their method is the end result of what can be seen. For example, if the road had a few potholes, perhaps, the city made a decision based on its budget to cover it. But what we don’t see is that, this is just a filled hole with a crown or patch over it to secure what has been placed in it. It is a temporary fix that will have a long-term consequence. As more people drive on this same road, the problem will arise again.
In the same sense, as entrepreneurs, if we build without knowing our original intent or purpose, then we will find ourselves, like the city, filling in holes and/or patching our way to success, only to realize that our foundation was built on the nothingness that we misunderstand to be something.
As an entrepreneur, your first step is to construct the outcome you want from the beginning. If you seek lasting success, then you must prepare accordingly. To do this, you must address the question of “why?” – Why am I here? What purpose will I serve? Why does this matter? Only when you understand and know your original intent, will you be able to start the construction process.
